Verification as a journalism response to disinformation in the May 2024 flood in Brazil

Abstract

This research analyzes fact-checking journalism’s role in the face of threats to information integrity caused by the spread of false information on social media during the May 2024 floods in southern Brazil. Fact-checks from seven outlets and interactions on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and X were analyzed using IRaMuTeQ. Vocabulary patterns and thematic gaps were identified. The study concludes that fact-checking seeks to reaffirm journalism as a space of truth in the struggle over meaning during the public event.
