Abstract

This article explores the contradiction brought forth by immaterial labor, that is, being indispensable to late capitalism’s expansion and, at the same time, opening up possibilities of escaping from its imperatives. By exploiting the common, capital is infected by it, sheltering social relations that call into question the logic of liberal economics, becoming a space of resistance against the marketization of all domains of life. Seen as a political language, the common fosters a repertoire of practices and a vocabulary that posits in a relational universe our ways of thinking about creating and sharing, thus suggesting an ethic of proximity, as opposed to the ethic of property that lies at the foundations of our legal system
