COMMUNICATION AS LATE BASIC SCIENCE: hypothesis in discussion

This paper investigates what type of science is (or could be) communication, raising the hypothesis of constitutes a late basic science. In order to do this, we investigate the classification of sciences in Brazil and the positioning of communication as applied social science, examining the conflict over the definition of subareas in the field and with Capes, as a tension between the theoretical-scientific apprehension and the professionalization process of communication. Then, it seeks out to evaluate in which ways communication can be considered an applied science, in contrast to the categories that define the basic sciences. Finally, the hypothesis presented in this research is released, based on the evidence that the development of communication has aspects of basic science and on the deep changes in social relations brought by the emergence of communication technologies, especially the internet, and its ways of being and living.Downloads
