Abstract

The article tries to explain the global televisual media phenomenon MasterChef with the articulation of three macrosocial aspects which enable approaching analytically both the cultural context of the time when the program is broadcasted (via the “structure of feeling” notion), as well as possible ways of meaning generation (using the concept of “quality of feeling”). We argue that the simulated environment of the kitchen displayed in the franchise justifies our use of the notion of “care” regarding both the upkeep of life and the presentation of the self, fostering thus the production of a distinctive effect of mediated affect. Examples drawn from the Brazilian, Argentinian and American editions illustrate such effect.
