Abstract

Since at least the beginning of the 90s, the samba style known as “pagoda” has an important role in Brazilian music market. The success of groups such as Raça Negra and Só Pra Contrariar has increased the samba market, achieving wide audiences throughout the country which a huge amount of styles. These bands merged informality and professionalism through an aesthetics that reported positively the love, changed some rhythmic patterns and sounded like mainstream pop music (national and international). This paper criticises the disqualification of the pagoda in the historical narrative of samba, especially on the festive celebrations of the genre’s centenary.
