Abstract

Aby Warburg (1866-1929) and Walter Benjamin (1892-1940), Jews and intellectuals born in Germany in the second half of the 19th century, share the idea of suspending the movement of history's linear course and have a critical and aesthetic view of the techniques. Tied to relatively distinct universes, they never met, despite Walter Benjamin's attempts. Among the many correspondences between their thoughts, we will focus on two unfinished projects - Aby Warburg's Atlas Mnemosyne and Walter Benjamin's The Arcades Project - in order to reflect on their legacy to aesthetic research methods, especially with regard to images.
