Abstract

The Internet has been increasingly used for religious purposes. Considering the close relationship between communication, community and religion, the study of virtual religious occurrences can be specially interesting to the understanding of community relationships on the network. Such work would make possible the evaluation of those features that are particular to the Internet and that can stimulate the formation of communities. Furthermore, it would also highlight possible new ways of “doing religion”. As a first step in this investigation the present work presents an attempt at classifying the different modes of religious manifestations in the net, starting with a critical analysis of two established taxonomies. The fundamental criterion proposed for this new classification is the way the user interacts with the medium. As an example of the classification procedure, the case of the virtual Church of Fools is considered.
