Abstract

In the book Nuit et brouillard, un film dans l'histoire (2007), historian and professor at the University Paris I, Sylvie Lindeperg unfolds the different paths taken in the documentary Night and fog (1956). By emphasizing that the archival footage should not only be considered as evidence to factual history, but as a document in constant becoming, Lindeperg retraces the images route employed by Resnais. Throughout the 283 pages of the book, Lindeperg leads the reader through the film's production process and analyzes its different perspectives along time. By exploring the relationship between cinema, history and archive, Lindeperg elaborates an analytic method that permits the process of using images of the past, reaching beyond the movie Night and fog.
