Abstract

The codes required for communication are produced by communication processes. That assumption draws up the zero degree problem of communication: what is the starting point for the communication phenomenon as producer and user of codes and inferences? The working hypothesis is the biological ability for imitation taken as the zero degree. The article dialogues with Gabriel Tarde, tuning and objecting his propositions about biological and social aspects of imitation; the dualism imitation and invention; and the communication flow against mere propagation. The conclusion proposes the ability to communication inventiveness as inherent to the lacunar aspect of the instinct of imitation.
