Abstract

The objective is to characterize and discuss the importance of Structural film in the interface between the fields of experimental cinema and visual arts, avoiding the interpretations from the critic and historiography of said fields, which held it as a modernist practice concerning reflexive exploration of the specific attributes of cinema or as a seamless continuity of the “visionary” romantic tradition of North American avant-garde cinema. In this sense there’s an investigation of the 60’s minimalist sculpture, a trend from which this cinema, according to the hypothesis, appropriated and reinvented parameters, notably those which enabled a reordination of spectatorial engagement.
