Cinema, Production of meanings, Ageing, Later lifeAbstract
This paper focuses on the social production of meanings for aging based on the modes of presentation of older people in today's cinema. We made use of two films with wide circulation to reflect on precepts, conventions, and assumptions regarding the place of older people in society. Derogatory stereotypes and prejudice can be confronted or reaffirmed in the selected plots. As we analyze the social representations of aging triggered by the entertainment industry, we highlight the role of the symbolic in the lived experience in order to argue for the social responsibility of communication in promoting more respectful and supportive ways of living and acting in the world. We demand the constitution of a more nuanced and mindful view of the dignity of later life.
