Definitions and Criticisms of Academic Productivism on SciELO

We propose a meta-investigation of 58 articles on academic productivism published between 2008 and 2024 on the SciELO Brasil platform. Through content analysis, the study scrutinizes how our scholarship defines the phenomenon, as well as its main criticisms and proposals regarding the evaluation of intellectual output. Using quantitative criteria is viewed negatively, as it allegedly jeopardizes both the studies’ quality and researchers’ well-being – although few papers offer concrete alternatives. By contributing to the broader debate on scientific policies in Brazil, the analysis highlights the extent to which the field of Communication has adapted to and resisted “productivist” pressures.
